The August Trendalicious is as follows:

August 6th - Extreme Snow
August 9th - Extreme Skate (yeah, I know that is not a Friday)
August 20th - Extreme Surf
August 27th - Extreme Bike

As there is no Trendalicious forum I thought it would be best to post here..after all the game is just Topix different graphics and a theme that changes every month

Well, on the plus side, at least buzztime is getting sponsors.

They might not be sponsors that trivia players care about  -- but at least they're getting ad revenue.

VH-1 was probably their best sponsor for Trendalicious so far. Wish they could get more like that one.

ESPN's X-Games should've sponsored this. After all it's Extreme Sports.

My question is, and for full disclosure, I'm a disgruntled 43 year old, how many people who play Buzztime know anything about extreme sports? I'll watch with half an eye just to see serious injury, but not closely enough to know who is doing what on what device.

I am close to 2 years old than you and I know somewhat about exteme sports. X-Games is about 11 years old.

I guess it is the disgruntled part then.

Very few regular players know anything about X-games and the like. As usual, BT is chasing that demographic that does not exist and never will regardless of continued trashy content.

The question is, how many times do those who understand the actual BT demographic have to say this?

Bo, I do have to say that I don't recall EVER seeing the apparently very valued 20-something crowd playing trivia. My stepson would play with us when he was in his 20s (and still plays), but that was because we were playing.

That crowd is not hanging out on a Friday or Saturday night playing Buzztime...especially if they are hoping to score a date! :P

The demographic exists, but it's impossible demographic to capture. Buzztime is like a stubborn fisherman on a lake that won't bite. They think if they keep changing the bait, the fish will eventually bite. You can try all the bait in the world in that lake, they're never going to bite.

I've seen the demographic play in a bar once. This was on a Friday night, about a year ago. They were kids about 21, 22 or 23 years old. They liked the 15 minute games. They hated Countdown. In Countdown, they couldn't grasp that the third clue gave them the answer. They took a zero score on about 7 or 8 questions in Countdown. I've never seen anyone get a lower score in Countdown than buzztime, but this demographic did.

The problem with the demographic (and this is why buzztime will never capture it) is they have an *extremely* short attention span. Whether it was the 15 minute or 30 minute games, they got bored very quickly. None of them made it through two consecutive games, whether it was two 15-minute games or one 15-minute game and one Countdown game.

These kids were locals. I have seen them in this bar again since then, but I've never seen them play trivia again.

Buzztime is trying to capture a wild rabbit. They might get one or two every so often, but the far majority of them aren't going to be caught.

I know a minor amount, but nowhere near enough to get a really good score.

I tend to watch a lot of the Extreme Sports when they're on TV.

FWIW, we have quite a few regular players in their twenties. At my home bar, I know of at least 5 who come out and play at least once a week. If you include the "early" thirties crowd in there, there's even more.

Granted, I don't think any of us plan to go out to play the Extreme Sports game, as, to my knowledge, it doesn't interest any of us all that much.

When talking about the BT demographic, the age of a player when they first started playing is just as important as their current age. I was 30 when I first started playing 15 years ago and I'd be willing to bet that BGTUNA and -BO- were 30ish or younger when they started playing too.

I wouldn't be surprised if BT has a survey that states that the average player first joined when they were between 25 and 35 and that is why they may be seeking that demographic. They may be going at it the wrong way but that is a topic for another time

That said, these Trendalicious games have very little to do about getting 20-25 year olds to play.

The Trendalicous game is all about Buzztime getting a few sponsorship dollars from an advertiser or a special event. First it was VH1, last month it was Comics-Con. This month it is the XDL Championship. As long as the amount of money received by Buzztime is greater than the cost of running a generic entertainment-related Topix game, Buzztime is ahead of the game. If they actually pick up a handful of players, then it is a lucky bonus.

I bet if Geritol was sponsoring the AARP convention and approached Buzztime with a wad of cash, they would get a themed Trendalicious game too. ;)

It's in the hopper now

That'd be pretty funny, too, as they'd go directly from Spotlight questions about artists such as Drake, Mike Posner, B.O.B. and Taio Cruz to a Trendalicious game of AARP material. You'd get both the AARP'ers and the 20-somethings, respectively, to cry "WTF are these people!?!!" in each of games

I started playing when I was 23. Back then there were no pop culture games to speak of and the content of such in CD/WO was <15%. Had I been 23 today, I would quickly see that BT is not a good training ground for shows like WWTBAM and Jeopardy and would rarely play. The only reason I play twice a week nowadays is because I enjoy the company of my teammates.

I suppose I could be more specific in my demographic description, the twenty-something crowd that hangs on every pop culture story will never play BT. The few twenty-something players are academic in nature, and prefer academic oriented questions.

I have to know about those artists since I DJ every other weekend and I have to add those songs in the system.

I started playing when I was 16! Yikes! :)

Granted, I didn't really play _regularly_ until I was in my early twenties.

Started in my 20s just as Steve said. My friends and I used to play darts or pool, then NTN showed up and we were hooked.

At Hardtimes we have all ages from 12 to 60s. There are a few groups of 20 somethings but they don't play too often, but enough to have made avatars and do play when they come in.

As for this Extreme promo, it could get a few people sitting around watching the tvs to take notice. That does happen a fair amount at Hardtimes. For every person with a box there will be another person reading the qs and commenting though not playing. Hardtimes does have a huge horseshoe bar so that helps. Remember many patrons at the bars see these Bud Light ads not just those with a box.

I hope BT is selling the fact to potential advertisers that there are almost as many eyeballs on BT screens as there are on the sports screens. Though the player count logged in don't show that. People do look at them all.

So we'll play some of these Extreme games, better than that Twilight junk!!

The current batch of 20-somethings cant stop checking their phones or texting long enough to play a 10-question BT game.
They also cant look you in the eye when talking, nor can they spell or use correct grammer anymore, nor can they likely find Europe on a globe. But I digress......... I guess I'm as disgruntled as one of the previous posters!!! I am a huge sports guy, but have to admit I know little to nothing about the extreme sports, nor do I have much interest in learning. I do admire the skill it takes to do what they do, but have no interest at all in watching it or trying to become a follower. Hmmm.........sounds like my same opinion of soccer. :D

Ummm...that might not be such a good example.
I don't think Geritol-sponsored trivia programs have the sparkling reputation that you're looking for... :D

Speaking of which, 21 is also how old I was when I started playing NTN.
Pain-in-the-ass 21 year-old jacklegs who mistakenly think that they know everything just like I did are still out there.
They just spend their time at home on computers now.

I'm guessing that those rose-colored glasses must be bi-focals. :P
I remember a lot, and I mean a lot, of questions about movies and music in CD games from day one. I started shoring up those two weaker areas specifically because of NTN trivia.
Your <15% seems a tad low. There were at least 3 to 5 PC questions more often than not back then. They were just older subject matter, obviously, and more in our demographic wheelhouse. It just felt like less pap. After listening to my buddy SHMEKL bitch about the music stuff after every game, it made taking his dollar even sweeter... ;)

Well, I know all through the 90's the CD/WO games were mostly classic trivia, and the issue in those days were the payola literature questions about books that sold fewer than 1000 copies. Sure there was an occasional movie/music/TV question, and at that time I would have probably complained that I wasn't old enough to know the material, but I don't remember I ever did. The change started sometime in 2000 with the influx of huge amounts of crap, and I remember exactly where I was when I first saw it. TGIF in San Antonio, a string of 26 straight entertainment questions in CD. 26. No exaggeration.

I could possibly concede 20%, but no more. But just think how sweet BTT/CD games would be if they used the Six content format structure.

That pretty much is what I remember, too. I had to bone up on a bunch of pop culture stuff (at that point in my life, I wasn't even allowed to watch The Simpsons, for Christ's sake!) so I could break 10000-11000 in Countdown.

I dont mind at all!! Certainly can take some correction when its required. If I cant stand the heat I'll get the hell out of Nagasaki! ALso, usually am making these posts from work and typing at warp speed to begin with, so I'm sure I have left unedited numerous typos over the months.

Just glad you agree and have witnessed the same things I have while out playing trivia. It can be comical sometimes to observe if it werent so sad on so many other levels

I was a daily player in the late 90s. There was less entertainment than current but I remember it as more common than BO.

I remember lots of 50's, 60's and 70's music, TV and movie questions during regular Countdown games during this period

About 25-33% of games had no entertainment. The average game would have 1 or 2. Two or three times per day, there would be a game with 3 questions. There were games that broke BO's 20 per cent threshold with as many as 4 entertainment question..these were rare..no more than once every day or two.

One good thing from the old days: the entertainment questions were never back-to-back

There were other issues: questions would repeat more often.. also complete repeat Countdown games were commonplace. Sometimes during the same day..if you played at 2 or 3 in the afternoon, the same game would often show up again around 7pm or later after the premium games..also one of the early Countdown games was often recycled the same day as a late night Wipeout with the same questions. There were other problems: I remember the same Trivial Pursuit (now SIX) game repeating 4 weeks in a row and a special promotion Canada-only half hour game that was rendered unplayable to due to graphics problems.
