/goddamned nightmare on elm street question

Can someone explain the SciFi connection to Nightmare on Elm Street ?

They often veer into horror, just not into the "name of the character in a horror movie" type setting. Still should have gotten it, but was pretty far afield.

I think it falls back into Buzztime's old "Sci-fi" means "Science AND Fiction" not "Science Fiction"

From the Buzztime website:

Boldly go where sci-fi fanatics and Trekkies have gone before. SciFiles™ is a science fiction trivia game that runs from moderate to advanced in difficulty. Literature, film and television questions abound. If you know your Asimov from a Black Hole in the ground, this is where to make Contact and show off your giant brain!

Prizes?
That's awful nice, but isn't the public perception of being the geekiest bar reward enough?

Was this list comprised from simple anecdotal review of previous rankings or was there some other metric related to player rankings on the BT site, or some such, involved? Just curious.

Given that there are five games in October and that one of those is on Halloween (and at the risk of being blatantly selfish due to my problematic attendance... :D ) dare I suggest the age-old practice of dropping one of the scores from the accounting? If not, no problem. Luckily, I'm a mindless lemming that does what he's told. "Cliff? Cliff who?"

Prizes will be quite meager. Nothing that will elevate anyone from trivia amateur to trivia pro. After all one can never have too many NTN bottle openers.

The list is a combination of previous rankings, plus some bars that we just wanted to challenge. Not scientific in the least. If you know of any others that should be included please let me know.

There is indeed five Wednesdays in October. As far as Halloween goes, we will have to play it as it lies.

Adams Mill would be interested in joining up, we usually play on Wed. nights. We are not always consistently well at the game, but have some good showings, so "what the hell" :) -Richte

You want me to contact Mezzanine? I know Mike (SLOTEK) is on Scaratings, but he might not be reading Sci-Files threads, and I don't think either of the other two main players (Eric/BISHOP and David/D MOB are on this forum.

Sure. Beth Kite, our area rep, will also contact the bar, but direct contact with the players is good, too.

I thought Megan was the rep for Houston. Are we on the same page here? We're discussing Mezzanine in Houston. And there's certainly no reason to contact Tonya, the owner who deals with BT-related things but who won't know about Sci-Files when I can talk to our friends across town directly.

As I said Beth is our rep. I am working with her to coordinate this thing. She will contact the bars in her area and most likely delegate to other reps to contact the rest of the bars. For some reason I assumed we might have the same rep.

Having the bars contacted through BT is a courtesy. It gives them a chance to promote it locally if they wish. We have been in BT contests before and didn't know it until they showed up in ads on our screens. So it's just a heads up.

As far as contacting the players, by all means, do so. The players are what the competitions are all about, after all.

Our scrappy bunch at Stewart's Brewing Company in Bear, Delaware, usually manages to crack the top 20 in this game. While this is not in any way due to my playing, as I suck badly at SciFiles, and while I'll be out of the country for at least the first week of October anyway, I put it to my team and they asked me to throw our collective hat into the ring. We'll try to round up our geeks and not completely embarass ourselves. Thanks!

Well, while the efforts made to get this going are appreciated, I must unfortunately call out a couple of issues with this process:

Apparently NTN Buzztime has now agreed to co-sponsor this, yet so far nothing has appeared in this main thread. Therefore, I ask for confirmation.

I do not agree with the action of entering teams without obtaining either confirmation or declination.

When I made the original post on August 13 this was just an idea I had and I was only looking for a reaction from this forum. When I felt this was a viable concept I immediately contacted Buzztime to get it going. Our area rep has been quite helpful in this matter. My bar, Shenanigans in San Angelo, Texas, is sponsoring the prizes. Buzztime will also kick in some prizes. The various Buzztime field reps will be contacting the bars on the list. The list is my doing and is a very nonscientific list of bars who we know play Sci-files and also some bars that we wanted to challenge. This list was posted on August 16 with an invitation to everyone to either confirm or deny whether you wanted to be on the list or not. The fact that Buzztime was involved with the contest was alluded to in that post as well. Another post on August 21 also mentions Buzztime's affiliation with this contest.

I have tried to be as open and candid as I can be in regards to this contest. If anyone has any questions regarding this contest, prizes, rules or whatever you can PM me or ask me on this thread. My motive was merely to add some interest to one of my favorite games.

I hope it stays a "players" contest and not become a Buzztime contest. Because Buzztime will find a way to screw it up. Thanks to all that got it started. Should be fun.

There have been times when local reps have contributed prizes and such to local events (e.g. the Houston bashes) without trying to become involved in running the event. I assume that's what the BT folks are doing with this tournament, and if so, that's positive. However, I really, really hope that BT doesn't try to involve West zone teams. It's one thing in a player-run tournament to let in known teams who can be trusted not to take advantage of the split; it's quite another to open the doors to any and all West zone teams, especially when there are prizes on the line, and assume that people we've never heard of before will act honorably.

It's OK, I'll just ignore most the West teams anyway (sorry, Lewser! :( )

Tonight at SRO-OT we saw two different screens promoting the October tournament, telling us we could get more details by going to the BT website. I just visited there, and I didn't find it in the "Happenings" section.

From the way it was worded, which included "your location" as the one bringing it to us, I gathered that it wasn't an open invitation to West zone locations not vetted for their promise to not make use of East zone compadres willing to give them the answers. But right now, given that I'm probably losing the other half of our SRO OT team for the duration due to COOGS' new job, I'd really like to know who is participating, especially if Mezzanine is in the mix, because it might make more sense for me to rejoin the Mezzy folks than try to play five boxes alone at SRO OT.

Brooke, thank you for your questions.

It is not listed under "Happenings." Maybe because it isn't an open invitation event, though I have seen other non-open events listed there.

You should see the details under your location listing. If not, keep checking. My rep says they are working on that, but it was taking longer than anticipated.

A correction to those details is that we plan on giving T-shirts to all three winners, not just first place.

Mezzanine is included, so that is an option for you.

Buzztime has wrong Old Chicago listed for Louisville. It should be Louisville Springhurst. Not sure how this happened or who can correct it. Only Old Chicago Springhurst is interested in the contest. Please drop other site from the list.

What is the structure for this--is it highest total score for the month? I haven't seen that listed anywhere.

(And an aside--I notice that Buzztime has this listed as "Rock, Paper, Scissors, Spock." Is there some sort of labor dispute, such that the lizards have been locked out? <g>)
