I was wondered what had happened with BT's foray into live trivia that they tested a while back, so I googled around and noticed this: NTN Buzztime buys trivia event outfit Acquisition aims to add value to Carlsbad company's network By Mike Freeman, Reporter - Technology & Telecom Originally published October 4, 2011 at 9:14 a.m., updated October 4, 2011 at 9:20 a.m. NTN Buzztime, which operates an interactive sports and trivia game network sold to restaurants and sports bars, said it is buying live trivia event provider Stump! Trivia from Trailside Entertainment. The Carlsbad company is paying $250,000 for Stump!, plus additional funds over the next three years depending on the gross margins in the Stump! business. Stump! Trivia operates in Northeastern states and conducts 300 hosted live trivia competitions a week in bars and restaurants, as well as at special events. Stump! Founder Bob Carney will join Buzztime and remain with the business. NTN Buzztime aims to tap into Stump!’s professional hosts – called trivia jockeys -- to enhance its own network. The jockeys function as player recruiters, MCs and food and drink pitchmen for the restaurants and bars. The company thinks trivia jockeys will to add value to NTN Buzztime’s on-screen programming. NTN Buzztime has 3,900 customers on its network and a base of more than 2 million registered players. The Stump! acquisition is expected to improve Buzztime’s profitability and cash flow for 2011 and 2012, the company said. |

I could be mistaken, but I believe this is the outfit that runs live trivia at Mad River (among other BT sites, I'm sure). Last time I visited there, we were multitasking between BB/SD and this. Could be a good move *shrug* |

Can't hardly wait for job openings for that....(Once a DJ here). This could be operated in non-Buzztime locations so it will interfere with the premium games. |

Could be a profitable move, but I think they need to replace the blue boxes. I don't like the next generation, but these seem to be at the end of their usefulness. |

Saw this about a month ago. My guess on this acquisition is BT wants to sell all the current Stump locations a BT system and switch them all over to the BT Hosted Trivia games they run now on a regular basis at Hooters and a few other places. The Hosted Trivia game is terrible and the Hooters near us runs the 2 hour game instead of normal BT premium games. Good luck there Mad River. ![]() The trivia is standard BT multiple choice, that will not work with Live trivia players that want open questions. Stump is mostly in the NE and 90% concentrated in the Boston area. Boston has long been a very weak BT area, not sure why there are so few BT bars there. Guess BT is hoping to grab a bunch of the Stump bars, several of which have multiple days of live Stump going on per week. 2nd reason may be the extensive question library that Stump has built over the last 10+ years. That could be worth 1/2 the purchase price right there. We have 2 Stump location nearby in Bethesda MD, it would be nice if they both got the BT system but certainly wouldn't go on the BT Hosted Trivia nights. Very slow game, no one will like the multiple choice format in a live game where there is 4 -5 minutes per question. |

Guess it will improve the Hosted Trivia by a guy who perfected the live trivia. |

The few times I've played are with the "older crowd"... young kids getting questions before their time kinda keeps me away (loose enforcement of no cellphones, to say the least).. As for why so few BT bars, I would say a variety of factors... Boston being a "very expensive" city; the wrong bars getting the game (please read Jethro's site review of "the Place" sometime); the worry about getting home after hours and hours of drinkin...opps - playing trivia ( driving around Boston sux). I'm sure I can figure out a few more if I think about it.. But I agree.. .this news is good Buzztime-wise... a quite refreshing change... ![]() |
