So I was browsing through the Buzztime blog, which I had given no attention since the week it debuted, when I came upon the announcement of "My Social Connections." I am baffled by the very concept. Is there any reason one would bother with any of this? Does anyone here do it? Does anyone anywhere do it?

Duh. Social media is cool and hip. Almost everybody is doing it. Where have you been?

About the only group that could care less about such banalities are trivia players. A fact that BT will never comprehend in their fruitless attempt to reach a demographic that doesn't exist.

You can tell that just by playing Playback!

You are correct about Buzztime players but not the general trivia playing community. Most of the local people I know who like trivia are playing on other formats such as Jeopardy! on Facebook instead of playing in bars.

I haven't done the social connection thing with Buzztime but as long as it doesn't impact the standard game in the bars, it doesn't bother me. and if this leads to 1 new regular player per site then it is a plus. We now have bars with a "0" in their average placing 172nd in Showdown. We can use any new players we can find

My last social connection turned out to be nothing but trouble. Fortunately, the doctor had a cure for it.

This is a fair point, but I think it is actually hurting the main product. Closing down the BT forums, for example, in favor of the myfaceytwitter crap, has significantly diminshed the sense of community I (and I believe others) felt. This leads to less interest, which leads to less play, etc.

Well, if it weren't for one (now apparently inactive) member that reprehensibly tried to make everything in the BT forum (and elsewhere) about themselves , maybe the BT forum could have kept going. :(

Well, I guess the question is are they building any sense of community on Facebook and Twitter.

I wouldn't know.

Any social media types out there care to chime in ?

See- I don't think so. I am certain there are a fair number of Buzztime players who have friended (or whatever) BT on Facebook or who subscribe to their Twitter feed, but in all cases, that's just one of a bunch of friends and feeds; one more piece of noise in the already cacophonic wall of information coming into their lives. I don't see it being a good medium for trip planning, game rehashes and event planning, which were the best things about the forums (and this site, for that matter), and those are the things that I think built a sense of community. A sense of community strong enough, anyway, that you rekindled this site and we all came over. I think BT would do more to build their player base by resurrecting those forums, even in a limited way, than they are doing now with the social media. I could be wrong, I guess. It may just be time for me to tie an onion to my belt and yell at a cloud.

I don't know if Scar and Buzztime would approve but the best course of action may be a link from the Buzztime website directing people who want to discuss the games in detail to this forum as well as twitter/facebook

I'm on Facebook, but not Twitter. I never check the BT presence on Facebook. Waste of time as far as I'm concerned.

Ditto, though I go to the facebook site once or twice a week to see if there's anything newsworthy. Occasionally whoever is in charge will ask a trivia question which usually gets answered within seconds, so people ARE visiting it. While the page has almost 14,000 who "like" it, I recognize less than a dozen Scaratings members who have posted at least once, and two or three who are semi-regular participants. Typical comments/questions there are: my site isn't reporting, why isn't QB1 in sync, the avatar creator needs more options, the android app isn't working, why aren't my players plus points updating, why can't I see my players plus points immediately on my iphone, how many players plus points is a game worth, what happened to this quarter's players plus rewards cards...sometimes an answer comes within minutes, sometimes hours later, and often the answer is "let me find out and I'll get back to you on that".

So for me, it's irritating to read, just as are the blogs on the BT website - yesterday's blog is another disappointing example - for anyone who doesn't get BT email notifications and might care, here's the link: http://www.buzztime.com/blog-buzztime/9 ... ztime.html

If that was line the email I recieved that kept referencing "dancing" and "rhythm", then I agree about the bad feeling.

Did Studio 54 have BT back in the day?

See, I've just assumed once The Season goes on its semester break that Topix & Speed Freaks will return to Friday.

Now, though, with this new game, I'm wondering if it will just replace The Season. The Topix game that used to complement Spotlight was always entertainment related...so this new "dancing" and "rhythm" game seems like it'll be the lead-in to Spotlight. Depending what it looks like, it seems like it'll be a better lead-in than The Season...which doesn't really belong before Spotlight.

OTOH, if it's as bad (or worse) than Blur then people might be longing for The Season

BT is just plain stupid. I mean really, using "sexier" when referring to trivia, that choice of words just shows how out of touch they are with their base. But, what base they have less than half of the players than in the past. I remember playing 6-7 days a week I am now down to 1 every two weeks or so. The game I would play every week isn't listed oin the Hall of Fame, so they can just fuck off for all I care a anymore.

While I applaude Buzztime for starting to attract new players with online gaming and social connections, don't they realize there is no need to merge it with the traditional bluebox business. They should treat the online/social as a separate business. By trying to merge the two with cross promotions and targeted questions they are killing the bluebox business.

Wow. I just read through the comments section after the blog. It's pretty close to unanimous in opinion and that opinion is not, "Ooh- cool, Buzztime! I can't wait to see what's in store!!!" My favorite:
Quote:
Thbose of us who have been through years and years of NTN/BT changes have learned that there's a direct relationship between the amount of hype and the frustration and disappointment we feel about the product, as well as a direct relationship between NTN/BT being secretive about its changes and the negative impact those changes have on the core players. So when a communication like this latest comes along that's all hype and doesn't reveal anything, I know what to expect--and it sure doesn't make me look forward to the new year.
Krazikatt interjects a couple of times, acknowledging concerns and trying to sound upbeat. How many times will they go through this cycle before they recognize their core players and try to grow that group? In any event, the comments are a hoot. I highly recommend a perusal.

Post subject:  Re: What? Why? Does anyone do this?

I find it both bemusing and troubling that apparently no one from NTN Buzztime has gone back to that blog since...as if a one day review is enough, not only for that blog topic, but also others with more than just a few replies.
