TMPLR was telling me about a legendary player in the 90s who had the screen name of DAVETV. I didn't start playing NTN trivia until the early 2000s. I don't remember seeing him on the boards. Does anybody know what happened to DAVETV?

He's still in Toronto wandering around the parks watching the birds.

He was a nut job in the 90s and probably is more so now.

FDAVETV

Get out of your recliner TIE and get down to BWW and get a drink.

Before P+, someone would play a DORKTV fairly regularly in Blacksburg. We'd get tired of seeing that other name on the boards.

Well, hell. For sure, DAVETV was an ubiquitous presence in Countdown games from around the time this lil old grumpy bastard started banging away a lil more than twenty years ago.

What turned me (and IMO numerous others) against him was his all too frequent use of his alternate name FOCUSA. Image That, of course, brought out FDAVTV and FOCDTV whenever either would show up. Image

I could be mistaken, but I think Dave gave me my first "FSPOTE" salute.
Back around '95 was having a bit of an afternoon with some 15s and a few others that were just short. After DAVETV came in second about the third or fourth time that afternoon, I noticed an "FSPOTE" a couple of times over the course of the next few games coming from his bar.

When I started playing circa 1998, DAVETV was indeed ubiquitous. The Toronto Star did a story on him -- here is a link:

Well, hell. For maybe the past year and a half or so, I've resembled that remark about 40 or more hours a week banging away.

OTOH, the remarks made by that (hopefully) former NTN employee are more than a lil troubling. IMO, NTN has consistently failed, and miserably, to reach out to their better known players, especially recently. If anything, I remain convinced that NTN Buzztime is deliberately trying to inflame better known players to walk away and make more room for those oh so crazy sexy cool 25-45 types they delude themselves into thinking they need so desperately to survive.

"What is a cheap thrill for players isn't so cheap for pubs to offer. Still,
at the cost of $996 monthly, which includes 10 playmakers". That was the monthly cost back in 2002. No wonder why sites are dropping Buzztime left and right now.

To quote the article:

There's no love lost between Hallett and NTN's Steve Breitner,
vice-president of hospitality sales for Canada. "He's not a good word around
here," Breitner says. "I've seen him, but I have no desire to speak to him.
I do know that some bar owners like him because he gets them up on the
(score) board, and I know a lot of bar owners don't like him because he'll
bump the regulars out all the time.

We've created a lot of players; I guess
we created one too many
."

Steve sounds a real charmer himself.
How big of a jackleg do you have to be to almost make DAVETV the second biggest douche nozzle mentioned in the article?
Yet another NTN big shot with no clue how to distinguish between cause and effect.
If I had a Player Plus point for every time they devalued their player base...

I thought Steve Breitner came across as a jerk also. Is a player going to another NTN site and getting better scores than the regular players at that location a serious problem for him?

I recall hearing a lot of stories about DAVETV which were a lot worse than what was in the newspaper article. I think NTN personnel would have good cause to be disgruntled with a person who called in multiple bomb threats.

I'm going to have to agree with CLIPPR. Bomb threats aren't funny. He might've thought it was a joke, but they have no idea of knowing that and if the RCMP had to be called in then he went WAY too far.

Call them idiots, or whatever other names you feel apply, but threatening to kill someone over trivia is ridiculous and this was in the old "glory" days of trivia before things like 15 minute games and West Coast split got people riled up.
