The first broadcast of "War Of The Worlds"?

While War Of The Worlds was *directly* responsible for the panic, why was "Chase and Sandborn Hour" indirectly responsible?

They ran no commercial broadcasts.

The program came on and sounded like it was real and they did not let the anyone know it was fiction until after the public was already in panic.

Not true. And not a correct answer to my question

I've got two guesses:

1- "The Chase & Sanborn Hour" show went off the air for some reason, making people think that the Martians did it.

2- The radio station playing "The Chase & Sanborn Hour" switched over to playing Orson Welles' "War of the Worlds" program for some reason or mistake. (I'll expand on this wrong guess.) "The Chase & Sanborn Hour" people got wind of what was going on with the Martian invasion, and decided to switch over to Orson Welles' "War of the Worlds" coverage, because they thought it was really happening.

#1 is 0% correct.

#2 is about 20% correct.

I've heard two different versions of why this happened, and although both stories vary slightly, they both have the same basic reason as to why the Chase & Sanborn Hour was partially responsible. It is important to note that both shows were are DIFFERENT stations/networks. I'll leave the question open for 24 hours more, then post the answer

I think I might have it...

The "Chase & Sanborn Hour" people heard what was happening on the "Orson Welles" radio show, and told their listeners to switch over to it to hear about the Martian invasion.

Though probably wrong again, I think that's a damn good guess. :D

Sorry Cloudy but still not quite correct. Anyone else care to take a stab?

Okay, as I said, there are two variations of the answer. I would have taken either as long as a key concept was mentioned.

In the first version, the Chase and Sanborn hour ran an hour before the War Of The Worlds broadcast on different stations. Chase and Sanborn ran a few minutes late, common with live radio shows. By the time people heard the end of C&S and then rotated the knob over to WOTW, the intro that included the disclaimer was missed by all these listeners.

In the second version, which I saw on Wikipedia, both shows ran at the same time, but a number of people who started listening to C&S switched after WOTW had already started. In this case too, they missed the intro and disclaimer.

In either case, the *overlap* of one show to the other caused people to miss out that WOTW was not real, and many fell for it being a real broadcast, thus causing the panic. Those who listened to WOTW from the start knew it was a dramatization.

If you would like to hear the broadcast of WOTW as it happened in 1938, I know of two sources. One is Satellite Radio (XM or Sirius) and tune to the old radio channel (I think XM is 164, but not certain). The other is AM 740 CFZM in Toronto (you can listen to this station over the Internet from their web site, or with the smart app TuneIn on an iPhone or Android pho9ne). CFZM plays old classic "theater of the mind" radio shows from 10pm - 11pm, and historically have had WOTW either on the anniversary of the broadcast (October 30) or Halloween night.

Cloudy, since you were the only one who gave this question a chance, I hand the torch over to you

(I believe this to be correct)

What was the only episode of the original "Twilight Zone" series that was not produced by them, but bought from an outside source?

This episode is one of my favorites.

I doubt Googling will be a problem on this trivia question, because I'm pretty darn sure that one of you smart guys or gals will know the answer in a heartbeat. However, just to keep things moving along, if I don't get the correct answer by Friday, October 25th at midnight, I'm gonna post the answer, and ask another one.

p.s. As usual, I will answer yes or no questions, and if I'm in a good mood, I might toss a clue or two out there.

p.p.s. Rod Serling was the uncle of my best buddy, Barry Brownstein, in 8th through 11th grade.

I am going to guess it was "Incident at Owl Creek Bridge".

I sent FrankC a private message a couple days ago, telling him his answer was correct and he was up to ask the next trivia question. Too much time has gone by, and I haven't heard anything back from FrankC, so to get this thread moving along, I will pose another question.

Here it is:

Helen Keller brought the first one to the United States. What was it?

(I got this from a crossword puzzle, and guessed it right.)

This is kind of tough, so as usual I will answer yes or no questions, and if nobody nails it off the bat, I will give clues.

p.s. Seeing that I am asking a second question, I have no problem with anyone Googling the answer.

p.p.s. If FrankC wakes up and wants to ask a trivia question, you all can skip this one, and let Frank ask his. :D

How about the seemingly obvious 8-letter answer: GUIDEDOG

GOOD guess...!

You aren't right, but are actually fairly close.

Here are two clues:

1- The answer is five letters long.

2- The answer starts with a vowel and ends with a vowel.

I thought I posted a question, but apparently like several of my posts to other threads, it did not make it here. I have a question to post. Let me know if you still want me to do it.

JohnL worked the same crossword puzzle, and sent me a private message with the correct answer to the Helen Keller question. JohnL is truly a noble person, because he declined to answer the question here to allow you other guys and gals the enjoyment of figuring out the answer on your own. JohnL, you can fly as my wingman anytime. :D

Frank is awake, and I think it is only fair to allow him to ask the question, which he is entitled to do.

The answer to my Helen Keller question is "Akita". Helen Keller became a world celebrity, and traveled to many countries. While in Japan she was given the gift of an Akita dog, which she brought back to the United States. Yep, it was the first one to poop in the backyard in the U.S. :D

Frank, if you are still awake, you are up again. The next question is yours. :D

OK. I am running out of trivia questions from off the top of my head, but here goes. Who said "It is easy to give the order to attack when you are not the one doing the attacking"?

This is a "20 Questions" type question that will either eliminate three probable areas, or confirm that it is one of the three.

Was the author of the quote an officer in the U.S. Civil War, World War I, or World War II?

I'm not asking which war. I just want a yes or no answer as to "yes" it's one or them, or "no" it's none of them.
