I've got the answer before you asked your question. Here's the answer to the question that you were about to ask:

The bowtie originated among Croatian mercenaries during the Prussian wars of the 17th century: the Croat mercenaries used a scarf around the neck to hold together the opening of their shirts. This was soon adopted (under the name cravat, derived from the French for "Croat") by the upper classes in France, then a leader in fashion, and flourished in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Either I win, or you will have to dream up another question.

Did ZOG really go to the Ukraine to help them fend off the Russian invasion...?

Just a guess, but how else can you explain his absence from this thread, when he was next in line to put a trivia question up here, and hasn't done it for more than a week?

ZOG, if you had the presence of mind to take your lap top with you, when you went over there to stop the Ruskies before they rolled over the Ukraine on their way to swallow up Albania, after reloading your rifle, please take a few minutes to post a trivia question here.

as creator and unofficial moderator of this thread, I hereby declare the floor open for a new trivia question. I am lost as to what the last question was and if it wasn't answered, so someone please start the chain again with a new one.

Thanks

Well... Okay... Let's try this...

When this person died, he was cremated & had his ashes molded into the product which he made phenomenally successful & was used in a sport which he was largely responsible for.

Who was this person & what was the product?

Yep. That 'dude's name was "Steady Ed" Headrick. I met him a couple of times in the days of my misspent youth as an Amateur & Pro Disc Golfer. He was a genuinely good person by all accounts.

Tiefly has the floor.

What is so unique about the Locust Heights & Western Railroad located in Hillbillyville?

Here's a guess, seeing that it runs out of someplace called Hillbillyville, which has to be in West Virginey, I'd say that it still uses coal fired steam engines. Hell, they could even be wood fired.

Good enough for me.

It is a family owned steam locomotive that a)has never made a profit b)is only a mile long and never leaves the families property c) still runs from May through Halloween for a donation.

It's in my hometown of Clarksburg and I never knew it existed until about a month ago. I plan on going for a ride when it opens in May.

Yiu're yp, Cloudy

Thanks Tiefly, I'll take it, even though I think you might have been a little bit too gernerous in passing the torch to me, after my somewhat close guessed answer. :D

I'll need a while to come up with a trivia question, because I had no idea that I'd be up to bat this soon. Don't worry, it won't take me days to dream something up. I'll try to put a question up here before the night is over.

This is not a trivia question.

Why does the "ScaRatings" sometimes give you a little box to delete a post, when you go to edit, and at other times does not...? How does this work? This is extremely frustrating to me, because my computer is constantly putting duplicate posts on this site, which I would like to delete, once I become aware of them.

p.s. If you haven't already guessed, I am typing this over a duplicate post that the "ScaRatings" offered no little box to delete.

ANON wins, even though he didn't actually spell out General Edward Pakenham. I knew he was being funny, and knew the answer.

Image

Pakenham was killed in the Battle of New Orleans. Supposedly, after the Americans recovered his body from the battlefield, General Andrew Jackson said that the King would probably like his general's body returned to England, or something like that. Because Pakenham's body would surely start to decompose on the long sea voyage back to England, Old Hickory sealed him in a hogshead barrel of rum, and sent him on his merry way. (I have also heard that Packenham was pickled to preserve his body, and sent back in a pickle barrel.)

p.s. For Pakenham's sake, I sure hope it was a barrel of rum.

p.p.s. Many will say that the Battle of New Orleans was fought after the War of 1812 was over. Not true. Yes, the Treaty of Ghent had been signed before the battle, however because it was signed on the other side of the Atlantic, and the long time it took to sail back across the ocean, Congress did not ratify the treaty until two weeks after the Battle of New Orleans was fought.

Thanks, Cloudy. I was trying to leave a hint for someone else, but it seems there were no takers.

Given the "Vice-Presidents" category in last week's Showdown, I'll throw out the following:

Until the U.S. adopted the 25th Amendment to the Constitution in the late 1960s, it had been the practice simply to leave the office vacant whenever a Vice-President died in office, resigned or ascended to the presidency. Thus, in the 178 years or so between the beginning of the Federal Government in 1789 and the adoption of the 25th amendment, how long was the office of the VP vacant? I'll accept any answer within a couple of years either way.

I get a rough back-of-the-envelope type calculation of 8,325 days of vice-presidents holding office in place of dead/assassinated presidents (1,430 of those by John Tyler), or around 22.8 years. I'm much less familiar with vices dying in office, but I believe it didn't happen as often, so I'll add six years to the above, and go with 29 years as my answer

Good guess, but still too low.

Okay, I'll tack on another six years, and guess 35 years

As there appear to be no other guesses, I'm going to go ahead and award this one to PENGWN for coming the closest. The correct answer is 37 years and 10 months(which was just outside the two year window for his guess of 35 years). In other words, for more than one fifth (about 21%) of the time between the beginning of the Government under the Constitution and the ratification of the 25th Amendment, the U.S. was without a VP (who seem to die in office almost as frequently as presidents).

It's all yours, PENGWN.
