Personally I am intrigued by the idea of medals per top 100 game. Even the best teams and multiboxers are likely to split on a hedged answer or be a second too slow on box 3 when they had to struggle for the right choice a chunk of the time (86th St gobbles up golds like nobody's business, but even they don't routinely average 10k/15k as a site game after game). Anybody worth measuring is very likely to keep that third box in the top 100 though so they will keep cranking that denominator up, lowering their effective rank. They will get more medals than non-multiboxers of course, but they'll also divide them into a greater number of top 100 games.

Now no method is perfect but if you use games as the denominator, exclude Appeteasers (not only for the easier cheating but for the easier perfect on only 7 Qs plus the lesser competition), cap the ratio of golds/medals to within a limited variance from the central tendency, and apply a correction factor for medal/top 100 to smooth out the multiboxing impact, it should be very useful.

One thought by the way is that multiboxing IS harder and does not deserve to be eliminated from results, merely limited. Spotes is a far better player than I am for example, but I doubt even he would claim he is twice or three times as good because he plays 2 0r 3 (or however many - it varies I believe) boxes - so we do have to limit that. But in a hypothetical game where I and his three boxes all get 10k golds, he has still shown himself to be better by being able to score 3 perfects. To do that you need more immediate recall, to avoid the "oh yeah" last second lightbulb that just catches the 1000 before it counts down where hitting 3 would be harder. You have to be much more certain -no lucky 50/50 correct choices - as multiboxers are likely to split. And of course you can't be distracted from the physical box management. Yes getting three golds IS tougher than getting one - it's just not 3 times tougher.

Rhino, I've come, over time, to change my thoughts on multiboxing. It may technically be cheating, but it's an accepted part of the community. Some sites tacitly allow multiboxing to permit five boxes in play; some sites have a norm of two boxes per regular player; some folks in the community play five or six boxes solo. I used to agree with you regarding multiboxing and team play being less than kosher, but after traveling around much of Buzztime World these past few years I've changed my mind.

But you do post a good idea. Let's look at it. Here are the leading sites in medals/Top 100 Score:

I think that your idea has both merit and challenges, Rhino. My site multiboxes and we play during the early medal games of the day. We should be lowered in relative standing if the metric is measuring what you want; sure enough, we are lowered about ten spots (discounting the previously mentioned outliers). Some other sites that I believe should be lowered drop significantly.

But some sites of which I think pretty highly just collapse in this metric...I'm happier with my original metric to determine average quality of play. I do see where you (or JOKER, playing in Shreveport) might prefer this metric. I certainly agree that the results are interesting...thanks for suggesting it, RHINO.

Correct. Whatever metric you all decide, if we ever to play more and be up there, we'd probably get dropped out, because if we do not multi-box, there will not be a bar score in our location. We very rarely have more than 4 people playing, and most of the time (until much later in the night) it's only 2. Given we play for a bar score, without multi-boxing, there'd be no point in playing at all.

Obviously no single metric is perfect but I think this is a good one - Thanks for the full listing. The only bugaboos here are lag cheats/Appeteaser timezoners and game-killers, all of which tend to stand out under close scrutiny. The list divided as you did seems a very close approximation to an intuitive ranking of bars on the basis of those which are very very good at team play including multiboxing when they attempt the same.

EDIT: It's worth noting that my prefernce is not at all related to my bar rank. Not only would it be an also-ran in any metric, but it's an impossible hybrid to measure against other bars. Most of my play is either solo or less often semi-assisted by the wife just in discussion. We play full team on Tuesdays and, very recently, on tournament Wednesdays. Occasionally the owner will instigate bar-sharing (which is sadly me and a couple of every-so often helpers then a bunch of button-pushers) during off-premium games. That's why the medal count is so slanted (the only other possible explanation would be that I am the world's biggest sandbagger, and I get more black looks for suggesting wrong answers than withholding right ones believe me). While I have been on "the dark side" of collective play quite a bit lately, bar rank except on discrete SD and team-Six games is well down my list of key metrics.

As far as the collapse of favored bars go, it's worth considering why they were highly thought of in the first place. Usually this is because of board appearances or knowing a player or two. Bars seen on the leaderboards a lot could be because 1) an excellent team or amazing soloist is there a normal amount of the time 2) a decent but variable team is there constantly. The latter will fare worse on this metric, and to me rightly so. A bar that elevates medal counts through 12 hour a day play scooping up LT and barely-1000 midday BT wins is not as good as a bar that gets the same number of medals in primetime three or four days a week. Of course the same will be true of bars where excellent teams go infrequently, and mediocre players go frequently, so it's worth looking one level down at key player metrics not just at the location level if you want to differentiate. One of my own highly favored bars suffers here too. Scotland Yard has several excellent players who normally compete solo or in smaller groups, but also sometimes as a bar team. If they teamed constantly they would be much higher in any ranking, but 'tis not their style.

Oh and yes I should acknowledge that there are at least two places where very good teams/soloists are there constantly. Medal rankings identify them cleary enough!
